Make it yours

◈ On-device processing
01 / HOUSEHOLD PROFILE

Document what matters, one room at a time.

Your item records and compressed pictures stay in this browser's device storage. No login or paid cloud service.

Values are entered in a single currency, with no exchange conversion. A policy limit comparison does not establish actual insurance coverage, exclusions, sublimits or payment.

02 / ADD YOUR BELONGINGS

Add an item

03 / SAVE & SHARE A RECORD

Take a backup before you need one.

CSV exports item facts but not pictures. The portable JSON backup includes pictures and can be large. Print can create a PDF with photo thumbnails using your browser's Save as PDF printer. Back up the JSON away from this device; clearing site data can erase your working inventory.

How to use this tool

Start with a room and add each possession with a name, quantity and replacement estimate. Include original and current values, identifying details, an item photo and receipt where available. Review totals, filter missing pictures or claim items, print an inventory report and store an independent JSON backup.

Quick steps

  1. Walk through one room and record each item's name, quantity, identification and estimated replacement price.
  2. Add photos and receipt pictures; review room values and missing-photo filters.
  3. Print the full or affected-items report and download CSV and a photo-inclusive JSON backup for off-device storage.

Practical tip

Photograph every room first, then document expensive and easily overlooked items in closets, storage and the garage. This browser's storage is not a backup; export and protect a JSON file containing photos away from the property. The policy comparison is an estimate, not a guarantee of coverage.

Common questions

Can I make a home inventory for insurance for free?

Yes. Record up to 5,000 possessions by room with item and receipt photos, quantity, model and serial number, then export print/PDF, CSV and complete JSON backups without an account or subscription.

Is this a downloadable home inventory checklist?

Yes. Add items by room and use Print / Save PDF for a printable household record. CSV is an editable spreadsheet export, and JSON includes photos for restoring the inventory.

What should I record for each belonging?

Include its name, quantity, location, brand, model, serial number, purchase date and price, estimated replacement cost, condition and photographs. Include receipts or appraisal references when available.

What is the difference between replacement cost and current value?

Replacement cost is your estimate of a comparable new item today. Current value is your separate personal estimate of what the existing item is worth; this tool does not calculate insurer-approved actual cash value.

Can I make a lost or damaged property report?

Yes. Mark relevant items lost or damaged, choose that filter and print a report of the flagged belongings. It is not an official insurance form or proof of covered loss.

Does it save photos on your server?

No. The inventory workflow stores compressed photos and item records in this browser's IndexedDB when allowed. Website hosting and third-party advertisements operate separately as described in the privacy policy.

Can I use the inventory on a different phone?

Download the JSON backup, securely transfer it to the other device and restore it there. There is no automatic cross-device synchronization; do not expose backups with private details.

What happens if I clear browser history or use private browsing?

Saved records can be erased if site data is cleared or storage is blocked. Keep multiple protected off-device backup copies and check that restore works before relying on the file.

Is the replacement total what my insurer will pay?

No. It includes only your recorded estimates. Insurance terms, deductibles, category sublimits, excluded causes of loss and depreciation affect what may be paid.

Free home inventory checklist and insurance documentation tool

A home inventory is a dated record of what you own, where it is kept, and what it might cost to replace. This free browser-based builder turns a room-by-room walkthrough into a practical, searchable list with item photos, receipt pictures, model and serial numbers, values and a printable report. It is designed for homeowners, renters and anyone organizing belongings for insurance, estate or personal records. It has no signup, subscription, usage cap or paid document export.

How to create a home inventory for insurance

  1. Start in one room, photograph important belongings and note their name, brand, model, serial number and distinctive features.
  2. Record quantities and the price you would reasonably expect to pay to replace each item with a comparable one today. Enter purchase and current-value estimates separately if you have them.
  3. Attach a photograph of the item and, where available, a receipt or proof-of-ownership image. Use the notes for warranty details, appraisals and where you keep originals.
  4. Repeat room by room. Search and filter the list to spot missing pictures. Review room subtotals and compare your estimate with your policy's stated personal property limit, if applicable.
  5. Download the complete JSON backup with pictures and store it somewhere separate from the property. Print a PDF for reference or export a CSV spreadsheet to edit and share with your insurer if asked.

Worked example: what to write down for a television

Imagine you have one television in the living room. Its original purchase price was $520, today's reasonable replacement estimate is $650, and you estimate its current secondhand value at $275. Enter quantity 1, replacement price 650, current value 275 and purchase price 520. Add its actual manufacturer, model, serial number, purchase date and photo. The inventory will add $650 to your estimated replacement total and $275 to the current-value total. These figures are user-supplied estimates, not the amount an insurer agrees to pay.

Replacement cost versus actual cash value

Replacement cost is an estimate of acquiring a comparable new item; actual cash value generally considers depreciation or other policy-defined valuation factors. For this tool, the “current value” input is simply your own estimate and does not compute an insurer's actual cash value. Your policy may apply deductibles, exclusions, special sublimits (for example for valuable categories), eligibility terms or depreciation. Review your policy and speak to your insurer before using these totals for a coverage decision.

Do I need serial numbers and receipts?

Record original receipts, purchase dates, model numbers and serial numbers whenever possible, especially on higher-value belongings. Photographs can help establish identifying details and condition, but a photo is not a guarantee of a successful claim. For artwork, jewelry and collectibles, record appraisal details separately and ask about special coverage limits. Avoid putting access codes, passwords, complete policy numbers or other secrets into notes or exports.

What happens after fire, flood, burglary or another loss?

Keep people safe first. Follow your insurer's claim reporting instructions promptly and keep damage photos, receipts and communication records. Mark the relevant inventory items as lost or damaged, then print an affected-items report. This is an organizational checklist, not an official claim form or evidence of a covered loss. Do not discard damaged property before checking your insurer's instructions. For general consumer advice, see the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' home inventory guidance and your own local insurance regulator.

Photos, offline storage and exporting

Item and receipt photos are resized on this device and saved with records in your browser's IndexedDB storage when available. Nothing in the inventory workflow needs a server, API key or account. JSON backups include photo data so they can be restored on another supported browser. A CSV file has no embedded photos. The printable report includes compact photo thumbnails and item values; choose Save as PDF in the browser's print dialog if available. Use a device and browser you trust; advertisements and general website services are separate from these inventory records, as described in our privacy policy.

Important limitations and backup safety

Browser storage is not a cloud backup, may be blocked in private browsing and can be lost when the browser or site data is cleared. The app reports storage failures; export a backup after changes. Very large imported backups or photo libraries may exceed your device's available storage. Download and test restoring your backup, then keep an additional copy off-device in a secure place. The tool does not independently verify market prices, inventory ownership, insurance eligibility, depreciation, coverage limits or claim payout.
