How this calculator works
Freight density compares a palletized shipment’s gross weight to the external space it occupies. It is used in freight planning and can be one factor in LTL quotations, but density alone does not set the final freight class.
What the calculation does
Enter the complete handling unit, including the pallet and packaging. Convert volume from inches or centimeters to cubic feet, convert weight to pounds, and divide pounds by cubic feet. Multiply by the quantity of identical handling units for shipment totals.
Important limitations
Not an official freight-class rating tool. Actual NMFC class depends on the applicable commodity listing and other shipment characteristics; confirm with the carrier.
Common questions
Should I include pallet weight and height?
Yes. Use gross dimensions and gross weight as actually tendered to the carrier, including pallet, wrap, and protective packaging.
Does more identical pallets change shipment density?
Not if every handling unit has the same weight and external volume. Total space and mass increase proportionally.
Does this calculate NMFC class?
No. It calculates density only; commodity rules and handling characteristics may change the final class.
