A practical guide

How this calculator works

Use this quick estimator to compare two uniform carton orientations on a pallet and find the number of complete layers permitted by your stacking height. It assumes all cases have a stable rectangular footprint.

What the calculation does

Choose the better of the two possible case orientations within the pallet footprint. Multiply cases per layer by the number of whole layers that fit within the carton-stack height limit.

The basic formula
Cases per layer = max(floor(pallet L ÷ case L) × floor(pallet W ÷ case W), floor(pallet L ÷ case W) × floor(pallet W ÷ case L)). Layers = floor(stack height ÷ case height).

Important limitations

Does not account for weight ratings, overhang, compressive strength, mixed layouts, tie patterns or stability. Verify the load plan before real shipping.

Common questions

Does maximum height include pallet height?

No. Enter the available vertical space for the cartons above the pallet deck.

Can mixed patterns fit more cases?

Yes. Mixed orientation or interlocking patterns can outperform the uniform grid used here.

Is it safe to use the maximum number calculated?

Not automatically. Observe pallet weight capacity, stacking strength and transportation stability requirements.
