A practical guide

How this calculator works

Packing teams often know the number of cartons but not the tape length required for a shift. This tool models center-seam or H-seal tape application on both the top and bottom of each rectangular carton. It turns the measured sealing pattern into an order estimate for full rolls.

What the calculation does

For a center-seam closure, assume one strip on the top and one on the bottom, each running the box length plus twice the end overhang. In H-seal mode, add two cross strips per side, each across the box width plus twice the overhang. Multiply by box count and apply your chosen waste factor.

The basic formula
Center seam per box = 2 × (box length + 2 × overhang). H-seal per box = center seam + 4 × (box width + 2 × overhang). Total = per-box length × cartons × (1 + waste %). Rolls = ceil(total ÷ usable roll length).

Important limitations

Assumes straight tape strips on the box top and bottom; it does not calculate full perimeter wrapping, reinforced carton designs, side sealing, or machine-specific cut patterns. Measure a few production boxes before purchasing large volumes.

Common questions

Does this include top and bottom closures?

Yes. Both the center-seam and H-seal estimates include top and bottom seals.

How much tape waste should I allow?

Enter measured cut and rework loss if available. The default is only a planning assumption, not an industry rule.

Why is roll count rounded upward?

You cannot normally purchase part of a roll, so the purchasing estimate rounds up to whole rolls.
