How to use this tool
Enter one English word or phrase per line. Choose grid size, allowed directions and a layout seed. Generate, inspect the placement report, then play or export the puzzle and answer key.
Quick steps
- Enter a themed word list, or try a ready-made nature or kitchen example.
- Choose grid size and directions, regenerate safely and review whether every word fits.
- Play interactively, print student and teacher pages, download SVG/PNG, or save a reusable project JSON.
Practical tip
Start with 10–15 words and a 15 × 15 grid. Easy uses right and down only; harder levels add diagonals and backwards words. Words that do not fit are reported, never silently omitted.
Common questions
Can I print a word search with an answer key?
Yes. Print puzzle and key produces two separate worksheet pages. In the print dialog choose A4 or Letter, portrait, and Save as PDF if available. SVG and PNG downloads can include either the puzzle or the key.
Can I use phrases or accented words?
English A–Z letters are supported. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are removed in the grid, and Latin accents are folded (café becomes CAFE). The original phrase stays in the word bank. Other scripts, digits and symbols are rejected with line-specific feedback.
Are all my words guaranteed to fit?
No. The placement report lists every unplaced word. Export stays disabled until all words fit. Increase the grid, allow more directions or shorten the list. The generator tries multiple layouts before returning its best result.
Can students play online?
Yes. Click or tap the first and last letters of a word in a straight line, in either order. Keyboard users can Tab into the grid, use arrow keys to move and press Enter to select endpoints. Found words are marked in the bank. Reset play clears progress without changing the puzzle.
Can I reuse a worksheet?
Export an editable JSON project containing your inputs and layout seed. Import it later to regenerate the same layout with this generator version. Change the seed or choose New layout for a different arrangement.
Is my word list uploaded or saved?
The tool does not upload lists or automatically save them in browser storage. Download a project before leaving. Share the downloaded puzzle with learners and keep the answer key and editable project separate.
Does it check for inappropriate filler words?
No. Random filler letters can accidentally form other words. Review the entire grid before distributing a worksheet, especially to children. The answer key marks the intended placement of each supplied word; incidental occurrences may exist.
