How to use this tool

Choose or paste a JPG, PNG or WebP. Draw rectangles over private details, or add a mask using exact pixel coordinates. Select a mask to move it, edit its size or delete it. Use opaque black or white for secrets. Review the flattened export, then download PNG, JPG or WebP.

Quick steps

  1. Open a static image or paste a screenshot. No upload is needed.
  2. Draw opaque masks or enter precise pixel coordinates. Inspect every private detail.
  3. Review the actual flattened file and download PNG, JPG or WebP.

Practical tip

Cover the complete sensitive area with a little extra margin. Pixelation is a visual effect, not dependable removal of secrets. Check every corner, reflection and notification in the exported preview. Originals and edit history stay in this tab only.

Common questions

How do I black out text in a screenshot?

Open the image, keep Opaque black selected and drag a rectangle over the complete text. Add a margin around the characters, review the output and download. The exported file contains flattened pixels, not movable covering boxes.

Can someone remove the black boxes from my downloaded image?

An opaque mask replaces the covered pixels in the flattened export; the original pixels and edit history are not included. This does not protect information you missed or details inferable from context. Share the exported file rather than the original.

Is pixelation safe for passwords or account numbers?

No. Small blocks and predictable text can still reveal information. Use opaque black or white for confidential details; pixelation is available for cosmetic obscuring only.

Are my images uploaded or saved?

The editor processes images locally and does not upload them or save them in browser storage. Reloading clears the image and history. Normal website asset requests still occur. Download your finished image before leaving.

Does it remove EXIF and GPS metadata?

The output is encoded from a new canvas without copying source EXIF, GPS or other source metadata. Visible text, landmarks and reflections can still reveal information. The output filename is generic by default.

Can I use it on a phone or without drawing?

Yes. Draw with a finger, then use the numbered mask list and pixel-coordinate fields to adjust. Add coordinate mask provides a keyboard-accessible alternative to drawing. Zoom and scroll help with small details.

Can I reuse the same redaction areas?

Export a mask-layout JSON to reuse rectangles on images with exactly the same pixel dimensions. Layouts contain coordinates and styles, not the photo. Import adds masks to the current image. Always inspect alignment on each new screenshot.

Which files can I use?

Static JPG, PNG and WebP, up to 20 MB and 20 megapixels, with neither dimension above 10,000 pixels. PDF, SVG, HEIC, RAW and animated images are not supported. Export a static image first.

Does it find sensitive information automatically?

No. All masks are manual. There is no face detection or OCR, and no promise that every private detail has been found. Review the full output before sharing.

How to redact an image before sharing it

Sharing a screenshot should not mean sharing a home address, a private conversation or an account number. This image redactor lets you cover selected areas while keeping the useful context visible. It works with static photos and screenshots directly in your browser, with no account or paid service.

Black out screenshot text with opaque masks

Choose a photo or paste a screenshot using Ctrl+V or Command+V when you are not typing in a field. Keep the default opaque black style. Draw over each complete private detail and include a small margin around its edges. On a phone, use Fit image to draw, then enlarge the view and choose Pan view to swipe around, or use the Left, Top, Width and Height fields for precise placement. Coordinate mask also supports a workflow without drawing.

Example: share a receipt without your address

Cover the name, delivery address, phone number and any barcode or QR code that could identify the order. Keep the item descriptions and prices visible. Review the whole receipt for repeated details, then download a PNG. The editor keeps the original unchanged; share the new redacted file.

Solid blackout versus pixelation

A solid black or white rectangle replaces all covered pixels in the output. Pixelation reduces detail but preserves averages and patterns; predictable text can still be guessed. Use opaque masks whenever the information must be removed. Neither method helps with private information elsewhere in the image or information that can be inferred from its context.

Flattened downloads and metadata

The review image is decoded from the same newly encoded file offered for download. PNG preserves crisp screenshots; JPG uses a white background for transparency; WebP offers compact output when supported by the browser. Export retains the original pixel dimensions, without embedding source EXIF/GPS or editing layers. Export filenames start with redacted-image rather than your original filename. Dimensions and format information required by the new file are still present.

Reuse a layout for recurring screenshots

Download a mask-layout JSON if the same dashboard puts private fields in the same positions each time. A layout stores dimensions, rectangle coordinates and mask styles; it contains no image pixels. Open another image of exactly the same dimensions, import the layout and inspect every mask. The same dimensions do not guarantee the same content alignment.

Privacy and supported files

Images, masks and undo history are kept in this tab, without upload or browser-storage persistence. Clear image removes the current editor session; it does not delete your source or downloaded files. Close or reload the page to discard the session. The website still makes normal page-asset requests. No OCR, face recognition, PDF editing or automatic secret detection is included. Use static JPG, PNG or WebP under 20 MB and 20 megapixels, at most 10,000 pixels per side; larger files may exceed phone memory. Save a static copy of an animated file first.

After redaction, use the image compressor for a smaller copy, the image-to-PDF converter for a document, or the photo contact sheet maker for a labeled review set. Inspect each final output again before sharing.
